Using child support for extracurricular activities

Having to pay child support might not be the easiest for your financial situation, especially if you recently finalized a divorce with the other parent. You might need to work a second or even third job to make ends meet. Either way, it is important that you do not miss any payments. One of the most common uses of the child support you pay is for extracurricular activities for the child.

Extracurricular activities are a wide-ranging group of activities in which the child can participate before and after school. This includes activities when school is not in session. These activities are not just limited to what the school offers the student by way of groups, clubs, or sports teams.

Child support payments can be used for any of the following extracurricular activities in which your child wishes to take part:

  • Summer camp
  • School-sponsored sports teams
  • In-town or travel sports teams
  • After school clubs, programs, classes or groups
  • Local or state-wide clubs (Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, etc.)

There are typically many fees associated with extracurricular activities, especially sports. Your child will likely need a uniform, equipment, a medical physical, an entry fee and potentially even tournament fees that have to be paid throughout the season. Summer camp is usually a one-time fee. Ditto for clubs and programs that take place at school after classes have ended for the day.

The uses of child support are vast, and it's important that you continue to make the payments so long as the support order is valid. If you have questions about the support you are paying, be sure to speak with an experienced family law attorney in Tennessee.
