Why should you get a prenuptial agreement?

On Behalf of | Jun 12, 2020 | Divorce

Tennessee residents like you want to enjoy a happy life after marrying. But in years past, signing a prenuptial agreement was counterintuitive to that. Many people thought you did not need this agreement. This is because it indicated you thought your marriage would fail.

These days, more people are getting prenuptial agreements than ever before. Views on these agreements have changed over time, leading to a different outlook. Prenuptial agreements now have a potential place in every married couple’s decisions.

The importance of protecting your assets

Business Insider asks why more millennials are getting prenuptial agreements than generations before. There are many reasons for this. First, younger generations are marrying at older ages. This means you have more time to build up your personal assets. You do not want to lose these to divorce, so you protect them with prenuptial agreements.

There is a high divorce rate in older generations, too. Many millennials experienced their parents divorcing. Needless to say, this can easily shape your opinion on marriage and divorce. Many believe it is realistic to prepare for a potential split and you may feel the same.

Changing public opinion on prenups

The general opinion of prenuptial agreements is also different than before. In older generations, people believed these agreements only benefited the very wealthy. Many viewed prenups as something for business owners or celebrities. These days, everyone has assets to protect. Even if you are not a public figure or wealthy, you still have the right to protect your property. This is one of the many reasons why opinions toward prenups changed over the years.
