Plan for divorce before you suggest it to your spouse

You married your spouse a long time ago. You were both young, and you both had lots in common. Today, that's no longer the case.

You haven't had children, but you have both excelled in your careers. You barely see one another, and you're not exactly sure what you are doing together. With no real relationship to speak of, you're ready to move on and find someone else. However, you're not sure how to prepare.

Can you just ask your spouse for a divorce and prepare later? Or is it best to start out on your own? Here are some tips to help you get ready to seek a divorce and to limit the negative impact that the divorce could have on you financially.

1. Think about money

Before you talk to your spouse about divorce, it's a wise choice to look into money. Do you have credit cards in your own name? Do you have a separate bank account or access to funds if you start a divorce? It's always best to have some cash on hand and to have money in your own private account, because joint accounts may be locked by the court until the divorce is resolved. Additionally, you want to make sure your spouse doesn't pull all the funds out of an account and leave you with little or nothing to live on.

2. Get copies of your documents

The next thing to do is to prepare by gathering documents. You need documents including stocks and bonds, information on assets in your home, receipts to prove ownership and banking documents. Essentially, any documents you can gather to support your case are helpful, and it's going to be easier to get them while you're still on good terms with your spouse.

3. Talk to your attorney

Finally, you need to talk to your attorney before you approach your spouse to ask for a divorce. Doing so will help you guarantee you've done all you can to protect yourself and your assets prior to seeking divorce. Once you indicate that you're ready to divorce, your spouse may not be forgiving or want to be helpful in any way. Speak with your attorney ahead of time to make sure you're prepared.

These are three helpful tips you can follow if you're thinking about getting a divorce from your spouse. By preparing, you can save yourself a lot of trouble.
