Before you leave your husband, consider these things

Divorce is a big step for anyone to take, so it is always wise to make sure that you have done your homework before filing. If you are determined that this is the best path to a better life, there are things that you should do first.

Divorce can be harder on women than it is on men, so keep the following in mind when filing for divorce:

Prepare for a different financial reality

You need to know whether your income will be sufficient to support you and your children. You may need to change jobs or even add a second job in order to be able to afford to maintain your style of living.

Plan a reasonable custody strategy

Never attempt to use custody of the kids as a weapon to wield against your ex. Understand that the Tennessee courts prefer to award joint custody to parents unless there is strong evidence of abuse, neglect or some other factor that would preclude sharing custody.

Determine where you will live

Maybe you plan to fight to remain in the family home — but can you afford it? You might have to downsize to a smaller place to remain in the children's school district or relocate entirely.

Choose marital assets wisely

It's easy to become emotionally attached to items from your marriage, but at the end of the day they are just things. When seeking marital assets, choose those that will help you make a fresh start elsewhere and not hinder you.

Consider mediation as an alternative to traditional divorce

Rather than battling it out publicly in a courtroom with your ex, the two of you (and your children) may be better served by mediating your divorce.
