If you’ve completed these steps, you’re ready for divorce

Some women put off divorce, waiting for the right moment to file. They either wait for the kids to get out of school, for after a long-planned family vacation or for various other reasons that might be unique to each individual. Unfortunately, postponing the inevitable is not doing anyone any favors. In fact, the longer you delay, the worse things might become between you and your husband.

One of the ways you will know if you are ready to file for divorce is by completing certain tasks. If you have taken care of particular divorce steps, then you are ready to move forward and end your marriage.

Your finances are in order

If you have already taken a full accounting of your finances and marital property, then it is time to take the next step. For example, if you have copies of your prior year tax returns, the closing documents on your Knoxville home, credit card and bank statements, and a list of every other piece of property you and husband own, then you might have a full inventory of your debts and assets ready for the divorce process.

You have your own accounts

If you have already opened your own bank accounts and credit cards, you have completed another task to get ready for your divorce. Since you will need your own financial identity before you split from your husband, it is vital that you complete this step before you ever call a divorce lawyer.

You have funded your accounts

Not only is having your own accounts important, but you need to fund them. The main reason for this is that you might lose access to the joint accounts when you file for divorce. Once you have enough money in your separate bank account to cover at least part of your divorce costs along with personal expenses for several months, then you have taken another important step in the preparation process.

If you have completed the above steps and set up your divorce team, you are ready to file for divorce. By delaying too long, you might make the entire process harder on yourself than it needs to be.
