Know the goals of divorce mediation before starting

There are many things to think about as you move forward with the divorce process.

Early on, you must decide if you and your soon to be ex-spouse will consider mediation. This isn't the right approach for every divorcing couple, but it's something you may want to learn more about.

Before we go any further, here's something to remember: Divorce mediation only works when both individuals are comfortable with and agree to this process. In other words, just because you want to try mediation does not mean that your former spouse feels the same way.

As the name implies, mediation is a process in which a mediator facilitates the resolution of any and all disputes associated with your divorce. This can include those involving child custody, child support, spousal support, and property division (among others).

If you want to succeed with divorce mediation, it's important to understand the goals. These typically include the following;

-- To create an equitable and legal divorce agreement

-- To avoid the expense and stress that typically comes with divorce litigation

-- To minimize bad feelings between the divorcing individuals, thus making life easier on both people in the future

With these goals in mind, it's much easier to not only start the divorce process but to make decisions that will allow you to move forward in an efficient manner.

There are many advantages of mediation over litigation. For example, this gives you more control over the process. Along with this, it is more affordable and less time-consuming.

With all of these benefits in mind, many people run toward the mediation process. After all, this gives them the opportunity to put their divorce in the past without spending too much money.

Final note: Just because you are going through mediation does not mean you have to do so without professional help. You still have the right to consult with a family law attorney. This is something you will want to do, as your legal team can help you make the right decisions during mediation.

Now that you know the goals of mediation and the benefits it can bring to your life, you may decide that this is worth a try. As long as the other person feels the same way, you can get started.
